Egypt Cause
Despite being one of the most populous and historically significant countries in the Middle East, Egypt faces a growing humanitarian crisis that affects tens of millions.
Poverty: A National Emergency
-
As of the most recent national statistics, approximately 30% of Egyptians live below the poverty line, translating to over 30 million people.
-
In Upper Egypt, poverty rates soar to over 50%, with some governorates like Assiut, Sohag, and Minya facing near-total deprivation in rural zones.
-
An additional 27% of the population is near-poor, meaning any economic shock could push them below the poverty line.
-
Income inequality continues to widen, with the top 10% of earners controlling nearly 50% of national income, according to UN data.
-
Egypt has been hit hard by global inflation and local economic mismanagement. The Egyptian pound lost more than 50% of its value between 2022 and 2024.
-
Inflation rates reached over 36% in 2023, with food inflation peaking at over 60%, driving the price of everyday items beyond the reach of many.
-
Essential items such as cooking oil, rice, eggs, and bread have doubled or tripled in price, leading to widespread food insecurity.
A Worsening Hunger Crisis
-
According to the World Food Programme, over 25 million Egyptians are food insecure, and this number is expected to rise due to inflation and climate challenges.
-
Stunting affects 22.3% of children under five, indicating long-term nutritional deficiencies.
-
Many low-income families skip meals or reduce portion sizes just to survive.
-
Rural communities, particularly in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta, often rely on aid to meet basic food needs.
-
The official unemployment rate is around 7.2%, but real unemployment, particularly among the youth and women, is far higher.
-
Youth unemployment exceeds 25%, and female unemployment is nearly triple that of men.
-
Around 63% of the workforce is employed in the informal sector, which offers no job security, social protections, or stable income.
